Shila Jones' 1955 Willys M38A1

I had been wanting to restore an old Chevy pickup that was made in my birth year, but when I saw this old military Jeep on craigslist, it was love at first sight. I had been going to the Midwest Willy’s Jeep reunions with my husband and quickly developed a love of the old military vehicles. We bought it for my Mothers day present along with an M100 trailer which was just icing on the cake. I helped David take it apart down to the last nut and bolt, diligently tagging and bagging all the parts for easier reassembly and then helped him clean every little part. I manned the sandblasting cabinet, he used a wire wheel on the greasier pieces and we took the big pieces to the sandblaster. My husband worked his tail end off putting this Jeep back together for me, and I was of very little help during the reassembly aside from holding things in place while he installed them. He painted every single item on this Jeep including the body, painted all the numbers and stars, and put the whole thing back together including the motor. He did the same with the trailer and when we displayed them at the Midwest Willy’s Jeep Reunion this year everyone thought it was professionally restored. I think everyone who showed up for the show including the vendors took pictures, stopped and looked at David’s handiwork and bragged on how beautiful it was. I am so very proud of him for doing this for me and I really don’t think he knows just how much it means to me, not only for restoring my Captain Jack, but to have him in my life.

  1. Very nice! My Sweet Bride of now 19 years ( after 12 years of dating) has supported me on my restoration of our 50 Willys pickup. She enjoys riding in it and appreciates the truck’s simple beauty. Both your husband & I have been blessed with good ladies who appreciate the finer things in life!!!

  3. Shila,

What a great story and awesome M38A1. What a Mother’s Day present! I could not be happier for you and your husband. I have a ’55 Willys and if I did not live in Northern Wisconsin, where they are forecasting a day time high temp of – 20 deg below this next Monday, I would drive it all year.

There is truly nothing like a “Jeep”! You will have to post some pic’s of the Jeep and Trailer. Enjoy!

PS…good choice on the M100. The tires are interchangeable…not so with the M416 Vietnam trailers. Wrong rim size
