This post was not what I first planned it to be. Well, maybe… It was supposed to be about a certain CJ2A by the name of “Old Yeller” that we featured on this year’s Kaiser Willys catalog. Except, when I started searching Google for tidbits on this famous Jeep, I realized that the name “Ol Yeller” appears to be as common for Jeeps as “Mr. Smith” is for people!

I also realized that while we have over 1,000 images of Jeeps on our blog, almost all of them are nameless! Now, I know that there have got to be some good names out there. You don’t pour your money, sweat, curse words and love into these babies without calling them SOMETHING special. So this is your chance to tell us what your favorite Jeep names are. Yours, someone else’s, it doesn’t matter. Comment on this post and introduce your Jeep! Tell us, if you want, where the name came from, and whether or not he/she comes when you call them!

If your Jeep doesn’t come when you call, maybe she needs a new carburetor! Whatever she needs, you’ll be sure to find it at www.kaiserwillys.com… In any case, here are a few of our favorite pet names found from various online sources:

1. JAMP (Just Another Montly Payment)

2. Patriot

3. Baby…oh boy…

4. El Guapo

5. Black Betty

Leave a comment – give us the scoop behind your Jeep’s pet name!

  1. JEM (John Edward Morehiser)

My grandfather (John Edward Morehiser) gave me his willys M-38 after owning it for almost 30 years. He didn’t have time to ever do any work on it but it was still his pride and joy. A year before he pasted away he gave it to me as I was the only grandchild who would be capable of restoring it. I couldn’t believe it and I consider this to be a great honor!!!

  2. The Ole Goat(3) the first ole goat was a 52 dodge we shared at a filling station, The next was a 53 Ford/jeep wagoneer combo. My latest is the 53 wagon/98 Toyota that is in your pictures section.

  4. Odetta. Like the singer from the sixties. ‘Cause she’s got soul! (Youtube.com- Odetta in the ditch)

  5. Kind of a loaded question around my garage. They can’t really have pet names because there are so many.
1960 Willys wagon is “The Willys”, there is only one that is actually a Willys. The Jeepster, a 1967 Jeepster convertible. The old bad truck/the new good truck. 2 J-series pickups, 1967 and 1982. The Cherokee, 1982 2 door Laredo. Your Scrambler. My Scrambler. The Wagoneer, 1980 Wagoneer. and the “new ones” known as “the Compass” and “the Patriot”.(purchased for mileage reasons only)

  6. It depends on whether its running or not. Not really, my current 1967 CJ5 carries the name Tyrone.

  7. The 1955 truck, we call “Willy”.

The 2007 Commander is “Cold Steel” because it is steel blue.

My old 2001 Cherokee was called the “Silver Bullet” because it was silver and the cold air intake caused a high pitched whistle like a bullet flying by.

  8. I have a 1950 Willys Station Wagon. I call “her” Marota.
Why? First time in my life I drove one of these was in 1979, in a farm near Turrialba Volcano, car was bought to the Maroto family, I was 15 years old on that time, and it sound to me nice to call so these kind of cars, aname reminds in my car.
Also, Marota is a name some people use to call strange things.
Looking at one of these cars, Don´t you think they deserve that name?

  10. When I was very young, my grandfather told me “Why, Boy, you couldn’t drive a goose to water!” I replied that if I knew how many gears it had, I could. When I bought the Jeep about 10 years later, it could be named nothing but “Goosetawater”. I’ve owned it now for 36 years, so I’m sure that’s the only name it will respond to.

  11. I have 5 Jeeps, they all have names, they are all male.

80 CJ5 “Mr. CJ” (in charge of rescue)
59 CJ6 “Mr. Sixe” (all the bells and whistles)
    59 CJ6 “Mellow Yellow”
    53 CJ3B “Junior”
    51 Pickup “Muckraker”

CJ and Sixe will come when I call, the others are a little more standoffish. Mellow Yellow lives in the AZ desert, all the others are Colorado Rockies jeeps. Junior is an engineering nightmare, Muckraker was a Forest Service vehicle and a welding tutorial. Mr. CJ has rescued all the others at certain times.

    Thanks,

  12. My 1952 M38A1 was my grandfather’s….then my dad’s and about 15 years ago became mine. She has about 37,000 original miles. I learned to drive in her. Both the Jeep and myself were “born” the same year. We just call her “The Old Jeep.” Simple and clear and respectful….She starts up most of the time, runs great and now each of my 4 sons has learned to drive on her too. She is a member of the family. 26. Lucky Penny.

I found a penny on our driveway and it was hard to believe, but it was dated 1944 D.
Since our GPW is a 1944 and under restoration I thought the name was a given.

  30. My 1950 Willys is named “Streaker”. It’s a long story as to why but, it goes back to my days in college at Murray State University in the very early 1970’s. Yeah, I know, Im old. 31. “Miquie Marrie” Is the name of my ’43 Ford 4X4 1/4 ton Truck (jeep). She is named after my one true Love…

  32. “Wally’s War” In honour of my father. He drove a simular jeep in WWII. He never talked about it much but according to local newspaper accounts he actually commandierd ( took without orders, stole) a jeep once drove directly into heavy enemy artillary fire and saved a severly wounded buddy. For his galantry he was awarded the bronze star, but like most of WWII GIs his only comment was that “anyone would of done the same for him it was no big deal”. I think he would like the fact that after some 65 years these things are still some of the toughest vehicles on the road and off.

  33. I haven’t named mine yet because it’s not finished but my wife named her “The B!tch” because I spend so much time with it. A friend of mine calls his CJ5 “Clyde the Jeep”.

  35. I bought my 1957 L6-226 Willys Jeep pickup from my boss in 1979 with 38,000 miles on it. He was an anesthesiologist who had bought it from the surgeon who bought it new. After that, one day in passing the then retired surgeon dropped by the hospital on a visit and as I walked by I overheard him ask the doctor I bought my truck from,”Do you still have Jesse?”. He pointed to me and said,”No,I sold her to him”.
That was when I learned Jesse’s name. I still have her only now Jesse has 58,000 miles on her and considerable wear and tear. Of course so do I.

  54. My pretty stock 59 CJ5 Willys was named “Old Iron” for several years. But after seeing it in non-stoppable action, my son has renamed it “Iron Will” for its unwillingness to be defeated by any terrain. Iron Will is the earned name and is very appropriate for this amazing Willys.

  56. A litle over a year ago I found my 62 Dj3A Dispatcher and am giving ‘her’ a makeover. It originally was my uncle’s who called her “Nellybelle”, I believe in reference to the Roy Rogers Show where Pat Brady called his half door Jeep “Nellybelle”. I often refer to her likewise.
