A couple years ago I posted an ad in search of a Willys project. A year went by, and I was contacted by a guy named Ron. Ron was an older farmer who inherited this Jeep when his friend Vern passed away years ago.

He told me he had a Jeep sitting in his barn that runs, and drives that he would be willing to part with. My father, and I drove a couple hours to check it out. When we got there was this old orange rusted out Jeep sitting right next to his barn with what appeared to be a hardtop made of ply wood, and storm windows almost looked like a chicken coop with wheels. My dad immediately looked at me, and said “what are you getting yourself into?” We hopped in, and it started right up, and was able to drive it around his cornfields! We immediately purchased it, and began removing the bubba chicken coop off of it, so it wouldn’t blow off on the way home.

As you would expect for a 72 year old Jeep it needed a lot of work to be road worthy. It is a rough old Jeep, but that’s what I love about it! I may restore it one day, or I might not! Right now I am just enjoying it the project of making it mechanically sound, and being able to cruise around in it. We ended up naming this Jeep old vern, the farmers friend that had owned it since the 70s.

  1. I have already posted in past our 47 Willy’s , with my wife on it. It’s and honor to own historic keep and share this vehicle.

  3. Chris, I did the same thing with my ’49 CJ-2A. Beside making it drivable and stoppable, I cut out the rust and welded in steel patches. It has more stitches than Frankenstein’s monster. I take it to ATHS and ATCA truck shows. It draws a lot of interest, just as it is.
    BTW,
These are fantastic images. Well done, on both accounts

  5. Rachel,
Good luck on your Willys journey. I began mine with a 1958 CJ5 about 3 years ago it has taken some
sharp turns and had some idle times but it continues. Keep it alive. Bg
