WINE COUNTRY WORKING MULE NOT A SHOW PONY. I got my dad’s old D4 Cat going after sitting a few years due to bad fuel contamination. My son asked me” what it would take to get the old Jeep in the barn going” that had sat 20 years. I replied, “money”, my son said “he would buy the parts if I could do the wrenching”. Even though it doesn’t look like it, this is a body-off restoration. Almost everything under the body was cleaned inspected throughly or rebuilt, the engine is still tight but when I replaced the clutch also had the flywheel turned. New tires, brakes, brake lines, u joints, wheel bearings, steering linkage, rebuilt tranny and transfer case, exhaust, and almost all electrical 12 volt. Had no seats just an old fruit box, the window has been replaced, gas tank and we have canvas for it. This old Willys is used almost everyday as a mobile tool box and does vineyard irrigation checks. We have had alot of fires here in Nor Cal in the past years, this CJ-3B has been a great tool for brush clearing and range management. I call it my chain saw golf bag. My son could have gone out and bought some sort of modern hunting UTV for a lot more $$ than this old CJ-3B but it is way more fun, tough and it’s street legal.

That old mule is exactly where she should be, still performing the tasks she was intended for. Kudos for saving her and putting her back to work.

This is great that he was interested in breathing new live into an old jeep. The bug has bite him, and he will never be the same after this, it only gets better from here. Enjoy the future adventures.

Nice job. I love my CJ3B, one of the last they made. If you don’t have one, get a Warn overdrive. Your jeep looks just right the way she is.

I agree with the overdrive suggestion to anyone still running the 3-speed transmission. Just no down shifting by engaging the OD, leave it engaged and downshift with the transmission. On this site, they are called Saturn Overdrives. A great Q&A section can be found here:

I have been on the same page as you in rebuilding vintage machines. The 1956 D4 Cat our church camp had didn’t run so my best friend and I rebuilt the pony motor, replaced the clutch and 1st gear. A few years latter I purchased his 1946 Willys that had been in a prairie fire and rebuilt it frame off top to bottom. Boy, both jobs were a lot of work but a lot of work has been done with them since then.

This CJ 3B is perfect. This what a Jeep should look like. I love the fact that everything under the skin is rebuilt or new.
