The Willys M38A1 was purchased in a sealed bid gov’t auction. I was not the highest bidder, but got a phone call when the high bidder backed out. I had 24 hours to pick up the Jeep, or it would go to the next person. My wife was not aware of this potential purchase so I had some explaining to do with only a single car garage, which already had a Jeep in it.

The Willys M38 was purchased many years after the M38A1 from a farm where the grandson was in charge of selling the Jeep. It was partially preserved, but not fully assembled. It remains a work in progress, correcting what was already done and ensuring that that the Jeep runs reliably. I’m not quite there yet with the carburetor. There were no data plates or frame serial numbers on this Jeep, so all I have to go with is the engine serial number and certain Canadian add-on’s that confirm that it is a Canadian Jeep and early in the procurement cycle for that model.
Both Jeeps are Canadian and are key pieces in my collection of Standard Military Pattern (“SMP”) vehicles used by the Canadian Forces starting in the 50’s through the mid 80’s before they were all disposed of.
I am a member of the MVPA and also the Ontario Military Vehicle Association (“OMVA”). The MVPA orange and red triangles are not technically legal in Ontario, as my Jeeps do not qualify as slow moving vehicles in the eyes of the motor vehicle dept. However, for safety reasons, I have them on all my vehicles and have not encountered any issues to date..

I believe some M38A1s were manufactured in Canada, maybe by Ford?

I am located in Campbellville, which is just west of Milton, minutes from the 401.
Canadian M38 and M38A1 jeeps were assembled by Ford Motor Company of Canada under contracts in 1952 and 1953, respectively. The second contract for Canadian M38A1 jeeps was produced by Kaiser Jeep of Canada Ltd in 1967.
