My name is Rich. I have always wanted an old Willys as a kid and found a 1951 CJ-3A on a friends farm in Missouri. I bought it from them in 2006 at 16 with intentions to restore it but after towing it home to St. Louis figured out the engine had to be completely rebuilt. College and life got in the way and the old Jeep sat another 10 years until I found the time/money to rebuild the engine and get it back on the road. Now that it is mechanically sound, I enjoy driving it around for fun while slowly working on the exterior!

Good day Rich,
My story also, but the years between purchase and getting started are quite different. You are right – real life demands do take precedence. Now I am back restoring (except for mandatory Covid break) , and enjoying working time allowed by retirement. Cheers to you and your project.

The Jeep shown is not a CJ3A, but a CJ2A. The 3A had a higher hood due to the use of the “Hurricane” engine from the M-38A1. This engine had the intake valves in the head and the exhaust valves in the block. The engine shown here is a “flat-head’ engine, with both intake and exhaust valves in the block. This is not a criticism, just a clarification. Keep up the good work!!

JIM;
SORRY BUT YOUR INDICATION IS WRONG.
IT IS A CJ3A, THE HURRICANE ENGINES STARTED WITH:
THE CJ3B, CJ5 M38A1 ETC.
THE UNDER HOODS END ON THE 1952 M38.
EVERYTHING FOR THE BACK IS WITH A L-4 ENGINE.

Hi Rich!
Nice Jeep. I’ve got a 1942 Ford GPW. I always wanted an old Jeep, too. Welcome to the family. These folks will be trying to give you the straight scoop on your Jeep. They love their Jeeps.
Happy trails,
Robert B

Hey Rich, I’m glad you got your Jeep. Before I started reading your story, I thought, damn, that looks like South St. Louis. Actually it could be any number of areas in St.Louis. Anyway, from a fellow St. Louisa, good luck with your Jeep.
