Dear Kaiser Willys,

My name is Marvin Hutson. A good friend of mine told me about the Willys photos you guys have at your website. I found a Willys Station Wagon on your blog that was like the one my dad had when I was boy. (The photo above is of John Patterson’s Willys Wagon). The Willys campsite photo brought back memories that haven’t surfaced in decades. When I was young, my dad moved us from upstate New York to Phoenix, Arizona in a green Willys Wagon. The Willys was the vehicle of adventure for our family. Mr. Patterson’s photograph reminds me of the first time I hunted deer with dad and his pack of hunting buddies. We were just a bunch of guys acting rowdy, drinking beer, telling stories and serious about the hunt. Each day we all got up before the sun rose and hiked into the endless wilderness of Sedona. Dad told me we hiked eleven miles the first day.

On the third day we stopped on a ridge overlooking the valley to take a break. When the time had come, he looked at me and said “well boy, let’s go get our deer” and sure enough we walked around the ridge and there was a big eight point mule deer standing there looking at us. Before I knew it, the deer bolted down the mountain! That big boy didn’t get 20 yards before a thunderous crack from my dad’s rifle met its mark. I turned and looked at my dad like almighty Zeus had just spoken. He said we were going to get our deer, and just like that we did. He looked at me with a huge grin and said “you got him”! When we returned to camp, Dad told the guys that I had shot the beast before he could even get his gun up. The guys howled at me and told me that this meant I had to paint my face with its blood, stand on the table and howl like a wolf because this is the ritual for a hunter’s first kill. I applied my warrior paint, climbed to my summit, raised my head and joined the pack. That was a great moment in my life. Thanks for bringing back a great memory!
