132: Wendall Cameron’s 1951 Willys CJ-3A

This is my 1951 Willys CJ-3A that I purchased in September of 1995. Was a farm vehicle used to pull hay wagons before I bought it. I disassembled to the frame and rebuilt it for trail and rock crawling while still retaining its heritage. Ready for trail in 1996 and it has been used to wheel all over the northeast since that date. Fifteen years and counting.

Engine – Stock L134 flathead

Transmission – T18 4 speed with 6:32-1 first gear

T-case – Stock model 18 with O’Brien’s 4:86-1 rock eater gears and 2 wheel low range

Front axle – Stock Dana 25 with Warn hubs, lock right locker and 5:38 gears

Rear axle – Stock Dana 44 with Warn full float 19 spline axles,

11” drum brakes, lock right locker and 5:38 gears.

Crawl ratio – 165-1

Suspension – 2 l/2” Rancho and RS9000 shocks

Other additions – Power steering conversion

New wiring harness 12 volt conversion

Warn 8000i winch with synthetic rope

Roll cage

32 x 9.50-15 Super Swamper TSL’s mounted on jeep rims

– Wendall Cameron

  1. What adapters did you use for the T18 to the L 134? I was going to do this conversion but couldn’t make it work without a lot of fabrication, so I just rebuilt the T90 and went back all stock on the drivetrain.

  3. I’ve had the pleasure of running trails with this Jeep and Wendall, and the extreme pleasure of riding shot gun in this little beast. It flexes like plywood and has traction like a dozer. The only thing wrong with this Jeep is it is so slow it uses all my memory card before he’s over the obstacle!
