My Willys story takes me through two different Jeeps before landing me at my current 1956 Willys CJ-5. I had my first Jeep (1995 YJ) when I was in college and I way over built it. My senior year in college I was accepted to law school and needed something more streetable. I sold my YJ and bought my dads stock 2000 TJ off of him with the money from the YJ. The TJ stayed with me through law school and many milestones – more than 12 years before it was so overbuilt I needed a trailer to use it. At some point the motor had enough and I had to part it out.

With the money I got (it was more in parts than together I guess) I found my now 1956 Willys CJ5. I bought it this past summer June 2020 and love cruising the back roads with the family, getting ice cream, and going for drives whenever possible. It has a bikini top, no doors, and no frills. It’s in great shape for its age and the guy I bought it off of added a few things to restore it to time period. I only added the rope for the front bumper and changed the filters etc. The Willys has the F head with a 3 speed, Dana 44s front and rear. The cage it has is aftermarket or possibly a custom job that is good for the kiddos. The electronics have been upgraded to a 12 volt and the vacuum system has been done away with.

I have reached a spot that I don’t feel the need to modify and lift my Willys and just enjoy it’s simplicity and ride ahead.

  1. Very nice! I like that color and the tire choice. Question. Stock would have had a Dana 44 rear and either a Dana 25 or Dana 27 front. Does it have a narrowed D44 front from another vehicle?
