I acquired this 1944 GPW from a 82nd AB reenact-or friend in 2018. I decided to do a frame up restoration, even though it was drive-able. It wouldn’t start, and was missing a lot of items. It took just over a year (and technically still ongoing), but it’s about 85% where I want it to be. It’s driving (I have 120 miles on it since I finished the bulk of the restoration). It’s DOB is June 26, 1944. From what I can tell with the various layers of paint (the original paint is still on there), it was build for the army, but went to the Marines instead for a spell. Then the US Navy got it and she possibly might have served with the 7th fleet based on some markings. Ironically, I decided on making her a Army Air Force Jeep since I photograph warbirds, so she’s technically worn paint for all the main branches.

I’ve wanted a Jeep for over 20 years since I found a passion in World War 2 history and collecting. I had been waiting for the right Jeep to come along, even after seeing other friends get Jeeps. It was something I told myself I’d own someday. When my friend decided to move out of state, he wanted someone to take the Jeep so it could continue being used and not hidden on his new farm. I could have kept the Jeep as is, fixed up the engine, then gone on my way… but I decided after waiting 20 years, I was going to do it right. Thus the full frame-up restoration.

  1. Good for you. Thanks for being someone who preserves and respects our history and protects items that are a significant part of our Country’s history. Your Jeep is a great representative of everything Americans are and looks great.
    Take care. Harold
