Drago Ljubetic's 1,000 Mile Trip in his Willys M38

This journey was inspired by our 28th marriage anniversary. This was such a good and refreshing experience for us. Also to remember when we started to travel in the same Willys M38 with our tent in the early eighties before we got married over the beaches of northern Chile. Be sure our Willys will take our grandchildren for rides too, that’s for sure. Our recent trip was over a thousand miles down the road in northern Chile (where the desert begins). Traveling with my wife to different places, mountains and beaches. Our M38 1952 was photographed and filmed along the way. Several new friends were made on the road, many bikers who felt a healthy envy to seeing us very comfortable sitting in this beautiful machine and running at 70 MPH without problems. Due to good maintenance, service work, and many new parts replaced, all supplied by my friends at Kaiser.

Free into the air feeling the smell of grass and earth in places where we find drizzle, also near the sea you can feel this great feeling of to be on the waves. It all comes down to one sentence.

  1. Nice looking Jeep…. But cruising at 70MPH….What…? How is this possible without some serious modification’s…? different engine and tranny and redesign steering ..I can barely squeeze 45 mph in my 1950 cj….which I think is about top speed for this jeep…..just curious…!!!

  3. Dear Wendell
sorry was an error between kms and mph
but it is true that this willys runs
perfectly straight road at 60 mph
because it has 47×11 gear ratio.
and also their original tires 700×16.
the engine is the original go-devil.
and thank you all for your comments.

  5. I took my M38A1 on I-75 for about 60 miles a few years ago. It would move along past the 60 mph mark, but I would almost be sucked off the road when a big truck passed. Veterans would honk and wave at me, but overall, it was a dangerous adventure. I will stick to surface roads and 50 mph in the future. That’s a great looking M38.

  13. Maybe the reference to 70 MPH is really in Kilometers which would be 43.495983 MPH.
    Don’t know just saying….

About color, in 1980 I painted based on personal taste, no code
it’s just a color tone cream (tea and milk).

The cost of having a willys m38 capable of crossing a country exceeds the 30,000
dollars, (at least here in my country) and much hard work.

I have this model in 12 volt
I’m finishing two more, for my children and one is being 100% Original 24 amphibian.

about cruising or maximum speed achieved is 110
km / h, and running normally always close to 55 to 60 mph

this is due to the tires, as I said, also spreads
have 47×11 gear ratio which is very important

with smaller tires and normal relations never reached more than 50 mph.on the road.

also thank you for all the pleasant comments
