108: Donald Hobson’s 1950 Willys Pickup Truck

1950 Overland Willy’s Pickup. Information about my vehicle: I bought this truck for $800.00 bucks,12 years ago from a guy that drove it from California to Minnesota. Upon arrival, the engine crapped a piston. He stored it in his mothers garage for the next 25 years. When I got it, it was all there. I took it home and had it all apart within a week.
The restoration took me some time to do. (I was in the middle of raising 3 small children) And now I have it finished! It has a 226 motor from a 57 wagon and drive train. Timkin rear axle and a 25 front. This truck is a very early 1950, (1 of 3,600) so it looks like the 49 and earlier.

Hope you enjoy the pic’s!

  1. pretty cool 1950 willys pickup truck, I’m still hoping to beable to rebuild my 53′ willys cj3b,it may just cost to much, I have to start from the frame on up, including the engine, it was all rusted out. I got it for free from my cousin and he just let it sit, and didn’t change the oil in it since 1953, which ruined the engine. All that is left of the 53 willys jeep is the front and rear axel.

  3. Very nice! Is the front grill the original?

I got my ’59 CJ5 in 1985 when I was in my first year in high school and except for the engine which was perfect and is even upto this day, the gear-box and drive train had issues as was with corrosion. That was all done back then along with a few cosmetic and facials during the last 25 years and since 1985 both of us have been having quite some fun. I am in Sri Lanka and my CJ5 (which I have named “Will”) is now apparently the ONLY surviving original petrol CJ5 in the country and gets quite a few head turns on the regular sunday drive.
