This 1964 CJ-5 Jeep has been in the family since it was bought new in 1964. My great uncle used it on the farm to pull grain wagons with. It originally had a PTO to power the hoist but at some time he replaced it with an overdrive. It was the first vehicle all us kids learned how to drive in the back country roads.
It was handed down to my father in 1982 who used it on his acreage until 1990 when he parked it in the barn. I told dad 2 years ago that I wanted to restore the old Jeep and that it would only take me a year. I was only kidding myself with that one, once I started I wanted everything done right. It was meticulous but rewarding work, especially when I took dad for a ride into town. It’s mostly original but I changed out the generator for an alternator and installed electronic ignition. So many memories with this CJ-5, it’s great to relive them again.

Beautiful CJ. Rebuilding a 66 CJ now with a homemade dashboard. Seeing how they should look is a great help. Love the colors too.
What color code is the paint? My cj6 was that color originally!!! Awesome restoration!

Love the originality and character of this Jeep! My ’62 isn’t as original (has a Dauntless transplant, w/headers and dual exhaust; electronic ignition; overdrive, etc), but I’ve kept the ‘old bones’ that keep it looking like factory.
It’s called “Spruce Tip Green” color code is 225. It’s the original color.

Where did you get the seat covers? KW has covers for earlier jeep models but not for the CJ5.
I have nearly the same situation
My uncle bought my 55 cj5 in 56
He used it to pull logs
He added a makeshift puller on the front hacked up cross members to put a inline 6 in it
It sat since 73 until I bought it from my cousin
Replaced frame and put in a v6 231 odd fire
It is in last year’s catalog
Red with full cab
Very nice restoration.
What electronic ignition did you use with the overdrive? I was lead to believe that the OD would fry the electronic ignition when it grounded out the negative side of the coil momentarily to release the torque and allow the solenoid to retract.
Micheal,
Your Jeep and mine look almost identical, color too, plus I also converted mine to a Alternator, and built an Electronic Ignition for it as well ! We must be twins!
It looks beautiful, you did a very nice job.
Outside of mine is identical, a bit more original underneath, oily spots, mine is more of a used version, frame probably still has some oil and pine needles and dirt from the 1960’s near El Dorado County in CA. and the same for the Sierras down near China Lake, CA.
Also spent 2 1/2 years in Reno, so explored areas there too.
I was always exploring as a young guy.
In Oregon now, and have even done some good adventures here too, but now I am 81 years old, not so much time left.
I have had my Jeep since I was 18 years old, got it in 1960, it is a 1956.
Hope you love and enjoy yours as much as I have mine…
Best to you, Micheal!!
Tom’s Upolstery in Independence reupoulstered the seats, very reasonable price. I had him match the original stitching.
