This is my 1955 Willys Jeep M38A1, it has been over two years since I have completed it. I have collected many of the parts from the USA, UK, Greece and also from different states in India. In olden days this Jeep was used in many of the Indian Forests for hunting (Shikaar), hunting is also known as ‘SHIKAAR’ in Hyderabadi traditional language.

The hunting, guns and Jeeps are the tradition of the ‘Royal’ Families of India, specially in Hyderabad. This Jeep belonged to my father from my childhood period. But now I’ve restored it with many original parts.

Original 24v electrical parts, GE Sealed Beam Headlamps, Autolite waterproof spark plugs, Autolite distributor and wires and 24v US Army Siren., Carter YS Carb, AC fuel pump, MP50 antenna, fording system inside, Firestone 700×16 Tires and Ramsey Winch with PTO complete and much more.

Since the 2 years it was taken for completion the restoration and after completion till now it’s been over two years. It has a smooth drive, enjoyable sitting and fires up perfect.

It took First Price in the Vintage Jeeps Rally, out of about 50 Jeeps from others.

  1. Nice M38A1pictures and an interesting restoration story!

However, it does not indicate anywhere, how this M38A1 came in to India. Almost all the Jeeps in India were either assembled or manufactured by Mahindra & Mahindra. A very few were imported but none of them were M series jeeps. A small number of M38A1 were captured from the Pakistani military during the 1965 and 1971 wars and eventually sold to civilians or used by government departments like Forestry, etc.

Hence, it would be interesting to know how this M38A1 came in to India.
