This restoration began in January of 2021 when I purchased this Willys 1952 M38A1, I call him Willy. I included a picture pre restoration to show where it came from. Originally I purchased Willy to be used on a new hunting lease that I recently joined. However as I’m a US Army veteran who served 5 years on active duty I decided to bring Willy back to life. 3 1/2 of those years I was stationed in the 10th Mountain Division. So for the front bumper markings I used my exact markings that were on my assigned vehicle during my years in the 10th. I also placed the division patch on both sides along with my service ribbon bar. Everywhere I take little Willy he turns eyes. I’ve even ran into veterans who used to drive these M38A1 and I love the stories they tell of what was involved to be qualified to drive these.

  1. Nice job you done on he jeep. If I am not mistaken. The 10th Mountain Div was made up from troops of the 3/17 Air Cavalary . I was stationed with it in Viet Nam A good outfit. Welcome home soldier and thank you for helping protect our freedom.Greatly appreciated.

  3. As a kid in 11th grade in Rodeo, Calif. I saw some Jeeps of this vintage at an Army Surplus yard in San Pablo, California.
I remember they had flat head engines, as in the M-38 flat fender Jeeps rather than the F head engine later used on the CJ-5 style bodies..
I always wondered if they actually were built that way with flat head engines, or in the surplus market they perhaps had no engines and were fitted with whatever was available.
You did a fabulous job restoring yours, it is beautiful and authentic.
Does it have the flat head engine or the F head?
Thanks for the great job, Brian, and for your service too!

  5. The M38 had the flathead L-134 engine.

The M38A1 had the F-134 “over and under” engine.

In both cases, there were a lot of unique additions that make them clearly diffeernt from their civilian counterparts.
