My dad and I found the Jeep in southern Montana in rough shape in the early spring of 2017. The goal was to strip it down and restore the mechanical aspects as needed. I learned a great deal throughout the process and even rebuilt the transmission on my own. My dad helped me with just about everything else. This spring we finished putting it back together. I love the look of the weather worn paint so we decided against painting it. In the past few months I’ve put several hundred miles on it running around the back roads here in north Idaho. My dad is currently working on getting his 1948 CJ-2A road worthy.

  1. What year model is it? I Have a 1963 CJ5 that almost looks identical to yours, including the front bumper, PTO winch, tow hooks and tow bar mounts! Mine is the same color faded green, but a previous owner added home applied camo, which I have left. Mine has a steel top. I use mine around the farm, and although tagged for the road, don’t drive it on the highway too much “cause “hurry-ups” are always blowing their horn to get out of the way. Jeeps are awesome!!! You’ve done a great job on yours!!

  3. Nicely done, Greg !! Makes me wish for one or both of my old CJ-5’s when I was young….when we get up there, you’re going to have to take your old Uncle for a ride !!

  5. Sorry to say this but your “Road Worthy CJ5” may be Road Worthy, but it’s Not a CJ5 unless someone somewhere in it’s lifetime decided to reverse the mounting of the front leaf springs making it into the military style. Or more likely you have a Road Worthy M38A1, congratulations ????‍♂️

  7. It’s a Jeep. Shouldn’t look showroom fresh. Wish I could get mine as great looking. Enjoy the ride.

  13. Oh what a lovely looking cj5, nice that you have not decided yo paint it, it has a character and a story to tell. Kudos to you and your father saving this beauty and I hope you enjoy it in future for long.

  15. Your Jeep is NOT a CJ5, but an army M38A1
This is very clear as it has an outside hatchet in front of the windshield for the two batteries which makes it a 24volt electrical system!

  16. Uy bonito tu Jeep espectacular el color que actualmente tiene refleja el paso de los años disfruta mucho recorriendo tu país un saludo desde Chile.

  17. Ebbe Pelle: Nope, It is a civilian CJ 5. The early CJ5s were made from the same patterns as the M38A1 up until about 1960. The battery panel at the base of the windshield passenger side is welded shut from the factory. There are many other differences throughout. An easy way for you to tell is the grill (non recessed headlights and marker lights and no hinges at the base on these civilian jeeps) and the front quarter panel has the “JEEP” embossed where as the military versions did not have that. the gas tank, tailgate, and dashboard are also different. Do some research on early cj5 vs m38A1 and you will see what I am talking about.
