Frame-up restoration completed in 2021. New body kit with the exception of the grille which is original. Stock 134 engine with replacement Solex carburetor, T90 3 speed transmission with Dana 18 transfer case. Axles are stock units upgraded with new bearings and gaskets. Interior, wiring and gauges were all replaced along with a 12 volt upgrade. This Jeep was given to me 24 years ago by a family friend who owned a junk yard. Being a young high school Jeep fanatic I jumped on the chance to have an original CJ-2A. The little CJ had no gas tank or drivers seat, a rusty body along with a homemade snowplow that was way to heavy for it. The front springs were completely flat and the frame was almost touching the axle. I tinkered on the Jeep and finally got it running and surprisingly everything worked besides the brakes. After a few weeks of driving it the rear main oil seal started leaking so I pulled the engine to replace the seal and noticed all the main and rod bearings were almost brand new. Someone had overhauled the engine before it was parked. After graduating college, I moved on to other projects and the little Jeep sat in the garage for about 18 years.

Fast forward to April of 2020 and I’m now a husband and father of two boys (ages 5 and 3) and we had outgrown our UTV that we used around the farm. I told my wife that I wanted to restore the old Jeep and use it instead of buying a bigger side-by-side. She had her doubts but being the good wife that she is, agreed to the project. I moved the Jeep into my shop in April of 2020 and proceeded to tear it down to the frame and repair or replace most of the components. A new body kit was ordered to replace the rusty original. 98% of the parts came from Kaiser Willys. The service was great along with the helpful videos and tech info. The engine was first started in March of 2021 and it was on the road by May. My two sons loved working of the “Old Jeep” and where so excited to take the first ride. Now they fight over who’s Jeep it is!

  1. Hi!

My husband Dennis is turning 70 in November. When we met (42 yrs. ago), he rode me around their ranch in his 46′ Army grade Jeep Willy’s (I’m gonna have to verify that year).

At some point, a ranch person blew up the engine and Dennis towed the vehicle to our home garage, where it has sat (without an engine) for decades.

It’s his lifelong dream to somehow find an engine to have put into the Jeep, and to restore it to good driving condition again.

The kids (35 and 33 yrs old) and I would love to find that engine for him for his 70th this year.

Do we have a prayer of finding an engine and shipping to California?

I’ve been doing some searching and I found you. Can you help?

I look forward to hearing from you.

THIS WOULD BE SURPRISE for Dennis, so I’ll have to keep it all quiet.

I can be reached at 650-740-2930.

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Good restoration job. But if only people would put the ground strap underneath the generator to the frame there would be no need for the 12 volt conversion. My ‘2A would start at -20 with the 6 volt system just fine. No need to change bulbs gages etc.

  7. 134 F or L engines are actually common , most engines can be remanufactured in any engine shop , if the engine block is cracked a new one can be purchased from Kiser willies for about 1900 , a new rebuild head is around 800 . A complete engine is about 2700 with 7 years 100000 miles warranty .

  9. Great story including the involvement of your two sons! Love the color you chose for your ride. Would love to get the color code for my ‘48 Cj2A which I am trying to get finished in 2022.

  11. Fantastic job Jason, I just love it when another old time Jeep makes it back on the road. Flat fenders will never die. Super project for your boys, much better then a new modern side by side by far. What part of the country are you in? check out Gartforvets.org drop me a comment and I will email you. Love the color you settled on. Go Willys Go!

  13. Great looking Jeep. I had the engine replaced on my M38A1 a few years ago when the engine overheated and cracked the block. Both the rebuilt flathead engine and the Hurricaine engines are available from a number of shops. I believe that I paid about $2,000 for the replacement, not including shipping. The rebuilt engine has stainless steel valves so the engine does not need a gasoline additive.

  15. I agree with you about a jeep over the side by side atv. The newer ATVs are almost the same size as a jeep, can go the same places, yet you can register the jeep and drive into town. Jeep wins

  17. Thank you all for the kind words. This was definitely a passion project. I kept all receipts and photos and am in the process of assembling a scrapbook so the boys will have documentation of the restoration their “old man” did.
