169: Jesse Woltz’ 1967 Jeepster Commando
This is my 1967 Jeepster Commando. It has the Buick V6, 225 Dauntless. It’s mated to a T18 4 speed and a Dana 20 transfer case. Stock axles, the 30 rear and 27 front. I saved it from going to the scrap yard. This is the second Jeep this year I am resurrecting from certain doom. I brought a 1973 CJ-5 back to life this spring after being dormant in a man’s garage for 16 years! It’s now running things on a hog farm in North Iowa!! Now its time to breath life back into this beautiful Jeepster.

Is that a CJ grille and hood or did they come that way?

I had a friend who had one of these Jeep Commanders many years ago. It was a red one with good paint and condition. I compared it to a jeep that I had and realized mine had the Willy’s flat fender body but the entire undercarriage including the drive train was Jeepster Commando. The same 225 V6 Dauntless engine with the same transmission and transfer case with Warn hubs. But the interesting part is that it has an extended front bumper with a PTO driven winch attached

Great find! Great shape! I have had several Comando’s slip through my fingers lately, all Dauntles powered. Doh! Jeep started them as a sports car model way back when. My cousin had a Willys model, then called a Jeepster. Looked like a roadster. And, back in the ’70’s my wife traveled cross country in one with two girlfriends on a senior trip from Colorado all the way to Maine!
Keep on saving our history!

The Jeepster Commando never came with a CJ grill and hood like this one has. A previous owner bolted them on to make it look more “Jeepy” It is on a CJ6 frame. I have located a Commando hood and grill and will be picking them up in a couple days. The truck was originally an automatic Turbo400 but it was removed and the T18 installed.
Its not for sale……but anything has its price and this truck would go for no less than $4000. Sorry, its titled and getting harder to find everyday.

I saw one the other day in the rush hour coming out of West Hollywood Ca. north on the 101 fwy . Not sure on the year but it had chrome front and rear bumpers with spare tire at rear in the middle. The rear bumper curved around the spare in 4 or 5 pieces, As he made it to the 5 fwy the speed increased and he was doing over 70 mph. I was impressed and it was a convertible the top off. Paint rusty red – not restored but in good condition. My 55 Willys Wagon tops out at 55 mph even with a Warn Overdrive. I gave him a thumbs up and he waved.
