156: John Taylor’s 1954 Willys CJ-3B

This 1954 Willys CJ-3B has been in my family for 26 years. With the help of my wife’s uncle the three month long restoration is complete.

  1. I have to say….nice job. I have a 1952 M38. Paid 12,500.00 for it. So it is in good shape. I went thru all the mechanical parts. I use the jeep, to drive 33 miles up to my cabin in Canada. I can go were ATVs won’t. I put a 9500 lb. Winch on it. After I reinforced the front frame. Turned out very clean. That winch is my insurance policy. Since I go where, there’s no one to help. I mean this thing will climb a tree. I drove a jeep in Vietnam, on convoys up north. And it would go anywhere. We got hold of a quad 50 cal. And welded it on the back of the jeep. First convoy out. A bunch of guys talked us into shooting it. We had the 50s turned to the side. And opened up. The recoils put the jeep on it’s side. Took 8 of us to up right it. Ah…….to be young again!

  3. Wish my ’55 3B was that clean! But then, nothing on it is original except the tub and frame;. And maybe the transfer case. It’s been a dedicated trail rig since probably the 1960’s. Always nice to see a nice, clean 3B!

  5. Thanks for the comments. The tub, frame, hood and motor are original. Although the original motor was in working condition, I had the motor rebuilt. The only new exterior parts needed were a tailgate and windshield. I had the interior of the tub rhino-lined. The electrical system was changed to a 12-volt system.

  7. Beautiful restoration. I am just starting on the body on my 1957 Willys truck. The engine and brakes are complete so I am at the point of just doing bodywork. I am so looking forward to the first ride when it’s complete with original tires and new paint.
