I bought this Willys Jeep about 2 years as a pile of parts. My 10 year old son and 7 year old daughter helped me rebuild it. Once the Jeep was almost finished we realized it needed a new engine. I’m a VW Diesel Guy… So I swapped in a VW TDI engine. I tried to keep the rest of the Jeep as original as possible. We drive this thing everywhere. It gets 38 mpg and has 120 hp 200 ft. lbs of torque. I’m running a T-18 4-speed with spicer 18 transfer case and a warn overdrive. Has stock CJ-3A axles with lock-right lockers front and rear with 5.38 gears. This build wouldn’t have been possible without Kaiser Willys parts!

  1. Seth,
i like the looks of your 2-A but if ou ever change transmissions there was a T-19 rarely used in J=series vehicles or ‘scout 2’s. It had creeper low synchronized and was the same O D’s. I out one in myCJ-7 and it is very strong.

  3. What a great family project to enjoy with your children. One of my proudest memories of about sixty-five years or so ago was holding the flashlight while my dad worked on the Jeep station wagon engine. Looking back on it I just smile because it was in the middle of the day. but I was helping.

  5. I am, also, VW diesel guy. I have 82 pickup w/ a 1.6 turbo, 2000 Golf 1.9 TDI GLS, and 2005 Passat TDI.

Recently, I brought a 1947 CJ-2A, in very good shape, with the Go-Devil engine, but only get 10 mpg.

I would like to see and know how you incorporated a TDI in the engine bay.
