Peter MacDougall's Willys "Old Girl"

Kaiser Willys presents: Peter MacDougall & “Old Girl”, a 1959 Willys 4WD Wagon with the straight 6 Hurricane Engine and over drive.

“I live in Bozeman Montana but I grew up fishing on Nantucket island, Massachusetts. In the mid 70’s my grandmother taught me how to drive both on the beaches and in the moors in our family’s maroon 1959 4WD wagon. Same year but the 4 cylinder model and no overdrive. As a teenager it became my pride and joy as not many people owned 4WD vehicles and I used ours to fish the endless beaches on Nantucket all summer long. Sadly my mother sold it when I was away at school one year and I never quite got over it.

When I had an opportunity to by this one in 2008, it’s owner needed a little convincing. So I sent him a copy of our family portrait painted in the early 1970’s. It was our whole family (3 kids, our dog, and my parents) sitting in/on our 1959 Willys on the beach. That was enough to convince him that it was going to a good home and he sold it to me. In honor of the occasion, I drove the Willys 1,500 miles from Jefferson City, MO straight to Nantucket Island Massachusetts for a month of Striper fishing on the beaches up at Great Point (see Montana license plate GRT PT!!) . She ran like a dream! After that I trailered it back to Bozeman, MT where it is regularly seen driving up and down the Madison river in search of trout.”

Kindest Regards,

Peter MacDougall

  1. I Have a 59 wagon that I am in the slow process of
restoring. I’d love to see more pics of this one
as well as more info on driveability of the over-
drive model. These photos and article have gotten
me excited about getting moving on my resto.
    Thanks, Greg
