Donald Lyon's 1962 Willys CJ-5

088: Donald Lyon’s 1962 CJ-5

Purchased in Oct. 2011, recently finished a 7 month refurbishing including new radiator core, brakes and a fresh coat of paint. Seats that came with it were not original, but with some luck, we were able to acquire a complete original set for front and back. Motor ran good from the start, needed only to have distributor rebuilt. My son Dan & I did all the mechanical, body and paint work. Reliving the memories of our 1969 CJ-5 and a 1946 CJ-2A that we had years ago. It has been a great Father and Son project. Doubtful this one will see a long cross country trip like the “69” did, dragging an 18′ Camper Trailer, to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, but will see lots of local miles with the grandkids.

  1. Very nice! I too have a 62 CJ5. Mine is a rolling project, I’ve had it for going on thee years. The front fenders on mine had been modified as well as a lift kit installed. I have worked primarily on wiring, lighting, and engine refurbishment. Next items are going to be new replacement suspension/drivelines, and exhaust.

  3. It was a labor of love re-doing it. I had the best time doing this with my Dad. Time goes by and things go unsaid, we regret later in life what we had and never talked about, I appreciate the time we have together. Hopefully we can do another one together, I certainly would look forward to being able to.

Tim, it’s what you are going to make of it. When done, it will be pure enjoyment.
