My father bought this 1960 Willys Station Wagon in 1961 as a car to be used in Nantucket, MA in the summer. For many years the old Willys saw use in the summer months, and storage in the winter. About 10 years ago, just before my father passed, we shipped it off island and had it repainted, the chrome pieces redone, the seats refurbished, and the engine gone over and repainted. The car, besides for the work done to freshen it up, is original. The engine still runs quietly and smoothly, the 4 wheel drive works well, and the 3 speed transmission still manages to get the old wagon around with little noise or fuss. The windshield wipers are still vacuum operated which makes driving in the rain rather interesting. It has proven to be quite a crowd attraction in Nantucket where it is used to this day.

I’ve got your twin right down the cliff from you on Hulbert! Our 1954 “Green Jeep” came to the Island right around the same time as yours and hasn’t been off until I sent her off for a full resto 3 months ago! Yours is so original and lovely! Kudos for maintaining it so well. I’m thinking about painting mine a new color for the next century’s ride. I’ll keep my eyes peeled summer 2021.

A vacuum pump and tank will not change appearances and make wipers work much better or they now have 2 speed electric wipers that fit where the vacuum ones were by bolting on in the same spot. That is indeed a family heirloom to be enjoyed!

Hi Rachel love what you did with wagon. Your father would be proud of you for keeping the Willys up and moving. I visit the island often in hope to see the old Jeep’s. I have a 1951 Willys wagon I cruise in all year. Love to bring it over to the island for a weekend. Maybe someday we could catch up and swap stories. Take care of that Willys. I’m from Dartmouth ma.

Love the Willys wagons, especially the 1950–1963 (I believe 1963 was the last year on the 6226 style) years. Yours looks great, inside and out. In my 1954 wagon, after the 6 cylinder engine got tired (116,000 miles) and before his passing, my Dad swapped out the engine for a 283 Chevy V-8. I sometimes wish the original 6 was still in the wagon……..but I added a Warn overdrive and driving down today’s freeways allows me to run with traffic at around 65 MPH all day long.
Ha!, l know how you feel on the vacuum windshield wipers. If it fits your needs, 1955/56/57 Chevrolet’s had a 12volt electric wiper motor that agitates just like the original Willys vacuum motor did. I installed one years ago and it works great! This motor will bolt onto your firewall with very little modification and you can control the wiper speed with the same original control button.
WILLYS FOREVER! 🙂
