This is my 1952 Willys M38A1 that I acquired around 1998 for a couple bucks. It was previously owned by the local community college as their ground maintenance vehicle. Records show it was manufactured in 1952 and first sold in 00/00/1965. I have just recently started to try and dig up some information about its history. The identification tag located on the wheel well behind the passenger seat was sanded down to nothing but a square piece of metal by some jackass long before I got it and was covered in several layers of primer and paint starting with the original olive drab OD paint and then I think a bluish color then a yellow and then several other layers of different paints with some mystery substance’s mix in there. The hood numbers and other required markings were destroyed long ago making it hard to find out its history.

On the right side of the engine block there is a tag that says it was rebuilt with several measurements on it. The body from behind the seats back had been cut off and replaced with a home made version fabricated out of plywood similar to a flatbed. The 24 volt starter and ignition was changed to 12 volt but still had all the original military equipment. All the blackout lights were still on it. As far as I know it was only used for the college campus maintenance so with no need for blinkers all the original blackout lights and such remained. The transfer case was rebuilt with lower gearing to make sure it can handle the nastiest trails you can throw at it. Transmission was rebuilt stock along with all the other vital components required to take on anything your heart desires. A heater was added along with comfortable seats, suspension, cup holders, gun racks, winch, lights ………

  1. Brett,
Looks like a fairly nice rig, even with the modification. Hope you have some good adventures with it!!
That lift piece below the windshield is an unusual addition.
    Very nice rig!

  3. I have a M38A1 built in 1954. There was a metal tag on the engine indicating it was rebuilt in 1960 at Atlanta General Depot and another tag the indicated the Jeep may have come from Ft Gordon. The color was a faded lime green with the small stars on the front fenders. It was in decent shape and had not been restored.. I had to replace the engine and had it painted OD like the M151’s in the Vietnam era. I don’t know how the Jeep ended up with a Army surplus dealer in Griffin, Georgia.

  5. THE WINDSHIELD WAS RAISED UP BECAUSE THE SEAT’S WERE RAISED UP AND BACK A LITTLE TO MAKE MORE LEG ROOM. LONG TRIPS WOULD CRAMP UP MY LEGS SO A LITTLE MODIFICATION WAS IN ORDER. NOW I CAN GET IN AND OUT OF THE SEAT WITH EASE AND NO MORE LEG ISSUE’S. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT
