Jay Stanfield in Cleburne, Texas… age 66, retired from the aircraft industry and living on 30 acres in the country… I bought the DJ-5G early in 2008 from an abandoned deer lease for $200. It started life as a “Postal Jeep” but I changed it all from right hand drive to left hand drive so I wouldn’t have to drive on the wrong side of the road any more. The right/left conversion is very straight forward and uses almost all factory parts.

I installed a CJ-5 steering gear box, cut the instrument panel in half, swapped it end for end, and welded it back. All of the wiring was extended 30″ to reach the new location of the gauges. The brakes and gas pedal were swapped side per side as were the brake and fuel line. Even the wiper motor and linkage swapped sides. A donor DJ was purchased for $150 and furnished all the glass and another seat plus lots of spare parts. The body was stripped by hand and repainted “Pale Buckskin” from the local auto supply.

Wal-Mart roll-in bed liner was used in the floor after 3/4″ foam board insulated the inner firewall. The engine is the Audi 4 cylinder overhead cam 85 Hp with a chrysler 3 speed automatic. It starts instantly and runs great. It is geared very low and just what I need for around the pastures.

Love this one. I will be restoring a DJ-4F to running condition in the spring. Body is not too bad but the frame is gone in the rear. It is the RH steering components (remaining/unused after his conversion) I am most interested in.
I will be restoring a CJ-6A steering in the next couple months. It was switched to a “buick” PS setup but it cut the floorboard and grill. I just want to take it back to stock unless somebody has a much better idea. The “buick” adaptation is a bit squirrely/oversensitive and it seems like 6 or 7 turns stop to stop.
thanks one and all.

Very cool, although I would’ve left the driver’s side on the right.:)

Great looking DJ5. We have a 67 CJ5 that is waiting to be gusied up. Can’t wait to get going on it. Your pic’s have built a fire under our seat. You didn’t mention the year, it looks to be in the late fift or early sixies. Anyway great job only hope to have ours come out that good. Darrel

Good restoration , I remember when mailmen used them. I never had an interest when they were selling them, as I had a CJ5 . But I wish I had one now.

I love the jeep. I myself am struggling to find someone who knows more about these like you know. I would like to know where to find a conversion kit so I can swap steering sides from right to left. I have an 83″ DJL and need people to talk to to help me find parts and answer questions.
If someone can help me find parts can you please tell me? Plus tell me how to change the steering sides too? Needz help!
I love your jeep. Good work on her Jay.

Greetings from MI.
Beautiful DJ you have!
I too have a DJ: A 1983 DJ5 with a hodgepodge of parts from prevous models. I think it was a rebuild at some point before i got it. has the BW M11 tranny on the back of a 6cyl AMC. My web page has some details.
Mine will be a driver – I have no plans to ever restore it. It has a decent amount of rust and bondo in the body. I am leaving the steering on the right, but I put in ’88 Ranger Front seats, and hopefully I will find a CJ5 back seat to put in the back for the kids. I plan to paint it this next 6 months, either all flat gray or black.
Just a quirky, rare little vehicle.
Keep in touch!
Mike

I am trying to find a dj5 (preferably a dispatcher left side drive) for reading rural water meters out of. If anyone has one within a couple hours of Houston, I would appreciate you’re time to let me know.

Great transformation, I have the same vehicle and I am livinig in a small island call Nevis. I might be the the owner of the only Willys Jeep in the region. My engine is the same as yours, and I am trying to get a a rebuilding kit with piston rings, head gasket etc, however my most immediate need is a starter for the engine. I will be very thankfull if you can point me in the right direction…. I will never give up my Willies Jeep, and its very comforting to known that other people take such pride in these classic vehicles…. thank you.

I am purchasing a 1971 postal jeep tomorrow morning! I am so excited. Someone has already installed the second seat in it but when my husband was sitting in it, he said the seats sat up too high. He is thinking the wrong size seats were put in. Can you tell me what seats you purchased for your jeep? Thanks
