This is a 1948 1 ton that was a special build for the New York State Parks department. (I have copies of the documentation.) They where repowered at a dealer in Water Town before going into service in New York State Parks, I believe this one came from Lake Placid. They where fitted with 170 CID Continental engines that where actually copies of Studebakers and where originally built for the Navy. (The Navy used lots of these Studebaker engines for Weasels, pumps and generators as the Army used Willy engines.) It was a stake truck from birth. There was no bed on it when I got it so I built one from original Willys documentation I found at a locale Salvage yard, How-Bills, that was once a Willys dealer going back before the forties.
Thanks, Chuck Facklam
I am trying to locate the Chuck Facklam who worked at Bryant & Stratton Electronics in Buffalo NY in the 80s. Are you he??
Dear Chuck
I recently found your two pictures of your willys pickup on the net and was very intested in the information that you had listed with the pictures.
You see I have come accross a very similar willys pickup that is resting in california and has been given to me. Now when I started some research on the engine, I couldn’t figure out what in the world was in it. It surely is not a willys engine, and from what I could find online it sure looks like an old studebaker 6 cylinder.
Which leads my interest to what you had writen in reguards to your pickup being repowered. Can you tell me more about these continental engines? Why did they get repowered and why is there so little info that can be found on them.
Thanks for your time!
