My friend John London (we both live in Nashville TN) and I wanted to share our M-38 photos. These photos include our run at Fort Campbell KY, home of the 101st Airborne Division, and our trail run at Turkey Bay (LBL) – Kentucky Lake and State Park (Land Between the Lakes). I also have three projects for the fall, a ’46 column shift CJ-2a; a 1944 military and a ’47 pick up.
Fort Campbell soldiers, having returned from overseas (been there for 1 year), and one bought a four wheel drive truck…his first time out he became stuck in the mud. Of course we advised him to buy a Jeep! HA! They had been waiting three hours and another huge truck tried to pull them out. Here we come in our M-38, John London’s 1951 M-38 and his 8,500 lb winch is all it took. Awesome! Thanks for this site..I look forward to the blog updates. A lot of fun!
I sent these because I am trying to get more local antique jeepers to come out. They will find that they can drive around the neighborhood with no problems. But to go out on the trail they will need to get their jeeps to as good as when they first rolled off the line, and that means upgrading parts! They are amazed at how well they perform but little things can stop them on the trail that the neighborhood roads will not.

I live in the central Little Rock area, I have a FC 170 1961 model if you do another ride I would like to try and make it. I like trail rides that are too demanding parts are very hard to find and very expensive as you know.
“Awesome” is the american word that comes to my mind.
This is exactly my way of jeepin’.
Theese images will hopefully inspire many to set free in the same manner and matter.

I am agree with your final conclusion regarding safety driving our wehicles. My 1942 GPW is under heavy restoration as for my mountain trails (about 100 km driving circle) i need as much as possible safety vehicle. it is very hard to be in deep forest without phone connection (no signal) under heavy dark nigfht. Mostly here in Europe Croatia we assembled our vehicles with old mercedes benz 200D engines + gearbox (1970 production year) what make easy spares stock available. These engines are good although in the jeepers rally we lost some points due to non original parts but safety is safety as benz diesel never stops. I used kaiser willys company to require spares due to good quality and profesional aproach to customers. Only problem is overseas shipping 180$ plus our 25% goverment custom tax what means that i have about 100% expensive final cost of spares as you see in catalogue. Mostly we buy from military scrap uncomplete units for spare, so every one has one jeep in pieces for future spare parts. People have some basic idea that sell 1000€ complete units like gearbox, trasnfer box front or rear axle etc… Expensive but it still works….my friend make complete restoration and final price is about 12000€…..for this money you can buy wrangler 2002 year but GPW is GPW…..
Thanks for posting the pics. It’s been a long time since I went through Land Between the lakes on a bicycle trip from Memphis to Louisville. Now I putter around in California deserts. I forgot how green things are back east. Very nice jeeps! I really like the full restores with the right gear attached. I have a favorite memory of my high school days in Bullit County watching a couple guys in scuba gear drive one with snorkels down the salt river. Hilarious!
just beautiful!!!! I’m in Nashville too! Sadly my M38A1 is in no shape to join you guys. However, I’d LOVE to chat about them anytime.
