“Rolling. Right. What’s happened… is that the bolt holding the alternator onto the motor disappeared, either sheared off or it fell out and came loose and disappeared along the (Mile Road). We took a piece of rope, oh piece of wood, sorry… We took a piece of wood, made it to fit, drilled the screwdriver into that piece of wood to hold it in place and act as a replacement bolt. We then hand cranked and got the motor running. She’s now charging, which is absolutely brilliant. Major Wallace, as far as I’m concerned, our trip: we have nothing to worry about.” – Video uploaded to YouTube by “DrLeavingsoon”

When I was in the Army in Germany in the early 1970’s and we had the M151 jeep with independent suspension. During one “field trip” we had a lot of rear differentials fail and we ran out of replacements. I moved the front differential to the rear and then, with a torch, cut out the ring and pinion gears of the bad rear differential so it could be used in the front (so we could leave the front drive shaft in so the oil would stay in the transfer case). I never thought about whether or not they were exactly interchangeable but it worked.I always wondered what happened when it was discovered that those jeeps had no guts in the front diffs.
