My unit is a retired brush truck from the fire co. that was next door to my homestead. They bought the Jeep used and put a tank and pump on themselves. In the early nineties they had a 350 chevy crate engine installed. I joined the fire co. in the early 70’s. I remember the truck as a good off the road truck but never handled very well on the road. It had a 10ft. flat bed on the short wheel base Jeep. Way too much weight on the rear end. The brush unit was put on a 1980 3500 series chevy 4×4. It seams to handle the weight much better. My 64 J-300 has about 42 thousand miles on it. I grew up next door to the fire co. It served well since the late 60’s. I bought the Jeep this winter from fire co. I grew up at the fire station. The co. was founded in 1946 and my family was active since the begining. My Father was president in the 60’s, Grandmother and Mother and sister were active in the auxiliary, Grandfather on board of directors. I was secretary for 10 years, my three brothers and I were fire fighters for years and my brother inlaw has been Chief for many years! So I guess you could say I grew up with the truck. Oh we also just bought a Ford 550 with a new brush unit. You can say it takes those two trucks to replace the 64 Jeep!
