To begin repairing your frame rail, create a guideline using a square, then cut the damaged rail from the frame with the appropriate metal cutting tool. Next, use a metal grinder to prepare the jeep’s frame for the new rails to be tacked and welded into place. Line up the original rail with its replacement to create guide marks for the proper cut. Tip: Use a square throughout the restoration process to ensure that your cuts will be properly aligned to the frame. Next, cut the new frame rail along the guideline with the appropriate metal cutting tool. Using the metal grinder, grind the new frame rail in preparation for welding the old & new frame rails together. Using a square, align the two rails together and tact them into place. Check and recheck the joint for squareness before making the last tack.
The Willys front frame rails will be put under a great deal of pressure so to reinforce the new weld we suggest adding a steel plate to help secure the frame rails together.
After all the welding has been completed use a metal grinder to smooth and finish the surfaces of your newly repaired frame rails.
