I watched this CJ-5, with a build date of September 1970, on Craigslist for over three weeks. The seller was asking $2900 or trade. I didn’t have $2900 but I did have a ’54 CJ-3B project. I sold the project for $750 to a coworker and called about the running CJ-5. We settled on $1000. I only spent $250 out of pocket. He said that he had over 50 calls about it but no one wanted to come that far up into the mountains of north Georgia. Win for me. After getting it home and really climbing all over and under my new Jeep, I noticed a lime green paint under the silver paint. It was also under the tool box lid and behind the heater blower motor. After consulting earlycj5.net it turns out that, along with other identifying features, I had a Renegade I. One of only 250 green ones made that year. The Jeep needs floor pans but otherwise the body is pretty rust free. So far I have rebuilt the front axle (kingpin bearings and races etc) and I am working on new seals in the transmission and transfer case. With all the fluids replaced I now have the perfect vehicle to take our kids to the neighborhood pool. I love your catalogue and was fortunate enough to visit you and your wonderful staff in person two years ago.

Great find, and I’ll bet the ride out into the mountains was an adventure full of memories too.
Nice find. In 1970 I ordered a new CJ-5 from our Jeep dealer. It was a Renegade, V6 engine, purple in color with white trim. I had the dealer install a white metal cap, a overdrive unit, and dual exhaust. I kept the Jeep until 1981 then sold it. To this day I regret selling it. In 1967 my Dad bought a 1967 Jeepster Commando convertible. I still have that vehicle sitting in my garage and it only has 23,000 original miles on it. That is one I will never sell. It will be passed down to my sons. Good luck on your project and may you get many years of enjoyment out of it.
