Thanks for submitting the pics of your M38A1 on the Kaiser Willys Auto Supply web page! I purchased a “55 Jeep CJ5” (or thats what it said on the pink slip and registration said) 2 years ago. It’s the same color as yours as well. As I began to rebuild it, I found many of the small parts for a 55 CJ did not fit. I finally bought a Chiltons manual and got a bunch of parts catalogs and found my Jeep was different from other 55 CJ’s. The instrument cluster was like yours, the left side glove box was like yours, the hood had a plate for a snorkel — etc. Finally as I began looking for a VIN, there was no VIN plate on the firewall. The engine is an F134 Hurricane F-head with the serial number “MD 20817”. No one could explain to me until recently that I have a “military version of a civilan 1955 Willys CJ5” — hence the “MD” designation on the F134 engine. I found the original owner recently who said it was purchased as a salvage vehicle from Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave desert here in Southern California.
Do you have any history on your M38A1? Since the color is an Air Force military blue, like mine, I wondered if your jeep may have had a similar history. Lastly, if you have the same engine do you have a similar serial number above the water pump on the block? Thanks for any info you have and the pics!
