Don’t hit the trail in your Willys without these essentials!
Summer is here, and that means you’re probably ready to clear your busy weekend schedule and plan to hit the trail, right? If so, then that means you’re going to need to prepare yourself for the ever-present possibility of a rollover, breaking down, or getting stuck in the mud! Here are some trail essentials you will need to stay safe and avoid injury:
1. Tow Hooks and Strap
2. Fire Extinguisher
Don’t let you rig burn to the ground when a simple fire extinguisher would have prevented it.
3. Hi-Lift Jack
A Hi-Lift jack can help change tires and un-stick you when you are deep in a rut. Some newer jacks can even help you winch your truck.
4. First Aid Kit
(Does this need explanation???!!!)
5. Shovel
Often, your Jeep will get stuck in a rut or hole. With a shovel, you’ll be able to either dig your truck out, or you will be able to move dirt/rocks so as to give your tires more bite.
6. Air Pressure Gauge and Air Compressor
An air gauge will allow you to run the correct pressure if you decide to air down your tires. Ok, we thought that far ahead, but what about the part when you are ready to go home, and you are trying to make it to the gas station on only 15 psi? Well, that’s why you brought an air compressor!
7. Jumper Cables
Do you really want to try to push start your Jeep when you get stuck in a rut?
8. CB Radio
(This one is just plain fun, but can also help in an emergency).
9. Extra Motor Oil
10. Duct Tape
11. Recovery Strap
12. Essential Fluids
(Oil, Coolant and Transmission Fluid)
13. Spare Tire
14. Fan Belts
(Easy to replace if you have a spare)
15. Small Tool Kits
(screwdriver, wrench, electrical tape, etc.)
16. Fix A Flat
Great to use in a pinch…
Above all, remember to STAY SAFE, because tomorrow, you’ll want to get back up and do it all over again! Need help finding the right part, or have technical questions about your restoration? Spare valves and a good valve tool. If tubed or tubeless valves can let you down. Spare tubes and also a valve stem replacement tool if tubeless for when and obstruction rips out your valve stem. A bit of rubber lubricant such as detergent and water in a small plastic bottle with a brush can make a big difference.
Rag to clean rims etc when serious tyre work is needed in the deep mud and rubbish.
