Transmission Top Shifter Assembly – Part#: 946111
Q: I have a 1948 CJ-2A and I’m having problems getting it into 2nd and 3rd gear. Feels like the shifter is locked up no grinding. I’m thinking I should buy your top shifter assembly for the T90, what do you think?
- A: It’s probably your synchronizer. Try part number#: 640391
Q: I have done a complete rebuild on a 1948 CJ-2A. (stock) what fun! My problem is the stock shift tower leaks and I need a solution. I have tried at least 4 different towers, same result. If I get your new top will it stop the problem. This is the only leak remaining on the old girl, any suggestions?
- A: Sounds like your fill level is too high. You may be overfilling the transmission.
Q: What are the two silver knobs on the assembly for? Is one of them a vent? The one I have doesn’t have either knob but does have the plates attached on the end of the shifter rails to keep them from leaking. Does this assembly fix that leaking problem or do you have to put the plates back on?
- A: Those are just free plugs for the shift rails. You won’t have any problems with leaking on these.
Q: My shifter assembly is leaking oil at the rails. Is this an indication of a problem? Will the shift rail caps fix the problem? Do you sell those separately?
- A: Sounds like it may be overfilled but it shouldn’t be a problem.

HI,
My ’51 3A pops out of 2nd gear when the drive train is not under load. Under power, it works fine. I have changed the gears, but it still does it. It feels like it’s actually being pushed out of gear by something. Otherwise, the tranny is fine.
Your thoughts?
