New IMPROVED Replacement Rear Main Oil Seal in Neoprene – Part#: 800093
Q: Neoprene crankshaft seal I removed from my 4-134 CJ-3B engine has raised printing on one side along with two arrows that don’t seem to indicate why they are there or what they represent. Does the arrows and the raised printing face the rear of the engine (flywheel) or face forward, toward the center of the engine?
- A: That goes towards the crank.
Q: How do you get the top seal around with out removing the engine?
- A: You just drop the oil pan and crankshaft from below.
Q: Where do the 2 round (about pencil size) rubber sticks go?
- A: Those are your side cap seals.
Q: The side cap seals appear to be a little long. Should they be trimmed?
- A: Yes these should be trimmed to fit.
Q: Which oil seal is better neoprene type or rope type?
- A: Neoprene is typically better.
Q: Any chance this seal will work in a 161 cid 6 cyl as well?
- A: For the 6-161 engine you have to use part number: 810324
Q: What is the proper way to install the neoprene crankshaft seal on my 63 CJ5? The ones I am installing seem to be above the edges of the block.
- A: It only goes in one way and sometimes needs to be trimmed on the caps. You should re-torque all the crankshaft caps as well.
Q: What is the procedure to drop the crank shaft to install a rear main seal. Also the neoprene seal raised writing I’ve seen in pictures shows the it towards the flywheel. My seal was removed by someone else so I did not see it in the engine.
- A: You have to loosen all your rear main bearing caps. Then go back and re-torque them each turning the crank each time to ensure proper torque.
Q: I have my transmission and transfer case out for a different repair. While it’s out, can this main seal kit be installed without dropping the crank?
- A: No, you just have to drop the oil pan and angle the crank down to install.
Q: Would you happen to have a vide of this process, or other clear directions I could review somewhere? It sounds like I will have to loosen the bearing caps to do this, is that correct?
- A: Yes you have to drop the oil pan and loosen the caps to angle the crankshaft down. We sell mechanics manuals and are currently working on a video for it.
Q: I have a 1963 Willys pickup with a 230 tornado engine. Can I replace the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine?
- A: Yes, I believe you just need to remove the front timing cover and then drop the oil pan down.
Q: I received my rear main seal for my 52 m38 but it does not have any markings to tell me which direction to install. P/N 134 41-71 and 17458.01
- A: The lip goes towards the inside.
