New Master Brake Cylinder – Part#: 805223
Q: What is the distance between the mounting holes?
- A: 3 3/8″ center to center
Q: Is there an upgrade to the original master cylinder on a CJ-3B?
- A: Sure, you can also use part number: 805223-CJDUAL. However this master cylinder is great and won’t give you any problems.
Q: What type brake fluid goes into a M38A1 brake system?
- A: DOT 3
Q: Is there a hole in the floor board to get to the master cylinder to put fluid in?
- A: Some models have a access hole. Some don’t. We do carry a cover part number: 7697522 that you can install.
Q: Rebuilding an M38A1 1954. Original master cylinder is sloppy. Are kits dependable or should I replace?
- A: The master cylinder repair kits are a good option but the bore on your old master cylinder need to be smooth. I always try to steer people towards this new master cylinder. It’s just alot easier and new.
Q: I need a push rod for the master cylinder CJ-3A is that available?
- A: Part# 647606
Q: What is the center measurement for the 2 mounting holes?
- A: It is approx 3 1/2″ center to center just like original
Q: Is this only the tank or does it come with the insides too (piston, spring, outlet fitting, etc…)?
- A: This is the complete master cylinder. The outlet bolt and fittings are separate.
Q: Will this fit a 1947 CJ-2A, also does it come with mounting bolts?
- A: Yes it fits all the vehicles listed. Mounting bold part#: 51883.
Q: Is there any way to purchase just the gasket for the cap?
- A: You have to make this out of paper gasket material you can get locally.
Q: Can you just buy the cap?
- A: We can get you good used. Please call us toll free.
Q: How far does adjustable pushrod go into master cyl so I know how far I can adjust it?
- A: You want 1 to 1-1/2″ free pedal travel.
Q: I want to put the disc brakes on a 1955 CJ-3B. What master cylinder do I use and do you have or need a proportioning valve? Can I use valve from any Jeep vehicle with disc front, drum rear?
- A: It is recommended to use a disc master cylinder and proportioning valve. We sell it in kits. Try part numbers: 376896 or 376897 depending on your Willys or Jeep.
Q: I have a 1971 M38A1, will this still fit?
- A: Yes as long as you are frame mounted single reservoir with 9″ brakes.
Q: I have 11 inch brakes on my 3A which I believe came from an early ’70’s CJ5 (no fins on the drums). But, this master cylinder is still the one being used. Is this master suitable for my 11 inch brakes or is there another master I should be using? Need something that will mount in same holes and I only need a single – not dual reservoir. Thank you.
- A: Please call us toll free. We can help you ID what you have and get the right parts.
Q: I have an early model M38A1 (DoD Sept. 1952) Is there anything special on the early A1’s for the Master Cylinder??
- A: No, this is the correct one for your vehicle.
Q: I just need the cap for the master cylinder 1949 CJ3A. Can I just purchase that item?
- A: We can probably get just that good used.
Q: What is the pistons size? Will if fit a FC170 drw?
- A: This is O.E.M. Piston size. The FC170DRW typically used a different one. Please call us toll free. We may be able to help out.
Q: Where do I find the serial number on a 48 jeep?
- A: On a CJ-2A they are on the firewall next to the oil bath air cleaner on the passenger side.
Q: I am replacing the master cylinder om my 48 jeepster. Is there anything I need to purchase besides the master cylinder itself. The brake lights currrently work so the switch is OK. Bolts etc.?
- A: I would get the crush washers: 637606 for sure. We do have new outlet bolts, brake light switches ect too…
Q: Why are the holes unthreaded? Do they have to be tapped before use?
- A: This is how it was originally. You just run a bolt straight thru it.
Q: I have a 1964 M38A1 with a brake booster on it someone told me its rare to find brake boosters on them. Will this work with my brake booster and hook up right?
- A: The booster is unoriginal and aftermarket. Depending on the type of booster im sure this would work ok.
Q: Does this master cylinder come with the connector for the brake lights?
- A: The brake light switch is part number: 647801
Q: I have a 1947 willys jeep but I need the proportional valve to it. I have the rest of the master brake cylinder but where can I find the proportional valve the old one which is ruined had the brake light hook ups on it to?
- A: The part number is A557
Q: I have a leak at the master cylinder on my 48 Jeepester. Where could the leak be coming from and how would it be fixed?
- A: If your old master cylinder is still on there then you probably have alot of corrosion. This will do the trick for you.
Q: My brake pedal goes to the floor. The cylinder is full and I bled the lines but did not get brake fluid out of the left rear bleeder. Could this be the plunger in the Master or what do you suggest? I don’t see any leaks.
- A: Yes, it is probably a master cylinder issue. You should also check inside by your wheel cylinders on the drum side to make sure your rubber is not dry rot and leaking internally.
Q: I have a 1966 CJ5 Model #8305A Serial #200778 Is this #805223 The correct replacement? How do I measure the brakes? is it the size of the outside drums? Do I have to take the wheels off?
- A: You want to measure the inside diameter of the drum across. After 1966 it could be 10×2. 1965 and back is always 9″ in the Jeeps.
Q: Is the cap plastic?
- A: Yes these use a plastic cap.
Q: My brake light was working on my ’53 CJ-3B, then it stopped working. I tested electrical and all works. I’ve noticed some fluid leaking, would this cause the light to stop working due to loss in pressure? I’ve noticed NO change in braking.
- A: You definitely want to stop that leaking. Its a pressure switch so that is probably why.
Q: Says it comes complete with boot. Does that include the internal parts? Are there any other parts that typically need to be replaced, when replacing the master cylinder?
- A: Yes it comes with the boot as shown. It is a complete master cylinder. You may also want to get the fitting, outlet bolt, crush washers, and brake light switch with it as well. We sell all of them.
Q: The original break fluid calls for S.E.A. 70 r1.Can I use dot 4 or should I use dot 3?
- A: We usually use DOT 3.
Q: Is there a dual master cylinder for my 49 Jeepster?
- A: You will want to get this part number the original one 805223.
Q: Is this unit brand new or rebuilt?
- A: These are brand new.
Q: Does this brake master need to be bench bled before installed or will it be fine with bleeding the wheel cylinders?
- A: It is fine with bleeding the wheel cylinders. The mechanics manuals we sell go over this step by step as well.

I have a 67 M38A1. I put all new brake lines, master cylinder, shoes. I bleed the brakes. Have a great peddle, no leaks. Peddle is hard and holds. I drive down the street and the peddle goes to the floor. I pump the peddle and nothing. I wait 2 minutes and the peddle comes back hard. I drive again and again no peddle. I change to a second new master. Same problem. I drained the dot 3 flushed and put in dot 5. Same problem. I pinched off the rear. Same problem. I pinch off the front passenger, same problem, I pinch off driver side. Problem goes away. I changed the new flex line to another new one same problem. I’m lost. Any ideas?

Q I have a 1966 cj5 and broke the outlet fitting when I removed it from the old master cylinder. It is a single outlet fitting. Is there a replacement out there for the single or are the dual outlets the same?
