353: Darrell Plough’s 1953 Willys Truck
I bought this Truck mid summer, the engine was recently overhauled and the body needs no repairs. I built a new front bumper for it. The brakes were toast and every brake related part was replaced with new except the pedal. The wiring was a wadded up mess and every part in the system that stores, generates or transfers electricity was replaced. Next week the clutch gets replaced, that’s about all for this summer. Over the winter it’ll get new door windows and various weather seals. Currently not planning on paint work, kinda like the “patina”. I just found out about a special event at the Mackinaw Bridge between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsula next April. They set aside a special crossing just for jeeps, Jeep the Mac! this will be the 3rd year, last year they had almost 700 jeeps! I have my registration and Motel reservations already! It’s a 3 day jeep extravaganza!

Jackie,
Great hear from ya. That dark gray seems to be a classic color. There is s Willys on TV the same thing, dish TV, Outdoor channel “Mountainman”, some guy in Montana running around the mountains. That year this was built, 53, there was almost 30 color options!
Mine was originally burgundy, there are traces of red, green, yellow, blue, light gray and dark gray, so it’s had quite a “colorful” past.
Thanks for the note!
Keep on keeping!
Darrell
Hey Darrel – My guy Gary has a 1951 Willys that he’s had for 30 years now and it looks a lot like yours – Beautiful. He just replaced the clutch as well but the paint on your truck looks identical to his. Just thought I would drop you a line to tell you how classic and beautiful it really is. He wants to get it painted though, but it’s the same color. Have a great day! Jackie
Dave, Thanks got the tip on the ground strap, we did replace the old one with the rest of the old wire. I went with NAPA halagen tail lights, Not too interested in original but wanted the brightest tail lights I could find!
It’s been fun so far.
Darrel,
Nice job on the truck. I think you will find the front bumper from the utility wagons very similar to the original on that vehicle. Be sure if it is the 4 cylinder version that the ground strap under the generator is in place or it can be a balky starter in cold weather.
