066: Tyson Mayer’s 1961 CJ-3B
After a busy summer of wrenchin’ I have finally finished the CJ-3B US Army M606 project. I’d love to see it added to the archive! It’s a GREAT driving Jeep! I am shocked at how fast and responsive it is with the Buick V6!
Here’s the details…
-1961 CJ-3B
-231ci Buick V6 engine (rebuilt by me with new pistons, rings, lifters, pushrods, plugs, gaskets, etc.)
-Novak trans adapter with rebuilt T90 3 speed transmission
-new paint/US Army decals/M606 data plate
-the number on the hood is my baby boy’s date of birth…I figured I make it something personal
-new tempered glass windshield
-new body mounts
-1960’s CJ front seats and late 80’s YJ back seat.
-Tyson Mayer

This Jeep started out as a rough CJ3b. It was built for a couple who’s wife had cancer in 2006 and a bunch of Jeepers built it for them. It was made to look like a m606. Cut outs were added for the shovel and axe. New floors, etc. It was built with a Volkswagen 1.6 turbo original but engine blew up and the Jeep sat.
The original Jeep build is on Jeepkings.ca under The Splinter Jeep build.
Wow! You sure did a great job restoring this Jeep! This labour of love is sure to be noticed on the road. Where do you plan to take it out?
those tires were real common in the 50’s and 60’s, had them on a dodge truck, and have them now on one of my jeeps. Really good in mud and snow

Yeah, those tires did rub a bit when hard turning. These jeeps have a crappy radius as it! The military tires work better…and they are marshmallow soft, so the ride is better.
I’m also wondering about thase tires. I’m thinking that those are Traxion 7.00 x16 if so do you have any issues with them rubbing. I have a set of Traxion 6.50 x16 and the work good but would like alittle bit more tire ou the road. Thanks Greg
Gerry…send me an email, I’ll tell ya about the paint… Tyroma2005@jormail.com
Gene…Correct! They were US designed, but only saw minimal service with US forces. Many went to other countries. Also, plans were sold to Mahindra Of India, and Mitsubichi. I think the Mitsu’s were diesels too!
Those tires are 8 ply 1953 Sears brand snow tires! Pretty knobby…they will stand up straight with NO bulge with 2psi in them! I swapped them out for correct NDT military tires in the fall
Thanks for all the compliments, gang!
Wow Tyson what a neat beauty, its almost perfect.
hi was wondering if you could tell me the paint code , name and where you got it thx looks great ! are those seats out of a 79 jeep ?
I Was in korea in the mid sixties and the ROK Army used alot of them – we were just getting the M151s.
The 3B is a really nice jeep, I owned a ’55.
I never saw one of these vehicles in 20+ years of Army service, but I think the Australians had this model in Vietnam. I would like to know more about the history.
What kind of tires are those?
