The Willys Jeep Frame is the structural center of the vehicle, carrying the load, and provides the basis for the normal function of the other components. The frame is constructed of heavy steel side rails and cross members. Brackets and diagonal braces are used to maintain the strength and correct position of the side rails. Any vehicle that has been in an accident which can result in a swayed or sprung frame should be checked for correct frame alignment, steering geometry, and axle alignment.
If a frame alignment tool is available this is the most efficient way of checking alignment and is equipped with bending tools for straightening parts. If these tools are not available the “X” or diagonal method may be used by checking given points on each side rail. The easiest way to check especially when the body is on the chassis is to mark on the floor all the points where the measurements are taken. Select a level, clean space, preferably cement, so that chalk marks are easily seen. Make sure the floor is marked directly under the corresponding marks. To reach the points and measure carefully move the vehicle away from the layout on the floor.
- Check frame width at front and rear end, using corresponding marks on the floor. If the width is correct, draw center line the full length of the vehicle, half way between marks indicating front and rear widths. If the frame width is not correct and the center line cannot be laid out from the checking points at the end of the frame it can be drawn through intersections of any pairs of equal diagonals.
- With the center line laid out, measure the distance from it to points opposite over the entire length of chassis. If the frame is in proper alignment measurement should not vary.
- To locate the point at which the frame is sprung, measure the diagonals marked A-B, B-C, C-D. If the diagonals in each pair are within 1/8″, that part of the frame included between points of measurements may be considered as satisfactory alignment. These diagonals should also intersect at the center line. If the measurements do not agree within the above limits, it means correction will have to be made between those points that are not equal.
If the bending or twisting of the frame is not excessive it might be able to be straightened. This should be done cold, as excessive heat might weaken the frame. It is recommended that badly damaged parts be replaced.
