The last pic was taken as we entered Panama. I wish I had taken more pictures of the jeep along the way. It almost floated downstream in Quatamala when we forded at a collapsed bridge. An enterprising guy was sitting in a big old mercedes truck on the opposite bank waiting to tow people out for a price. He was dissappointed when I caught rocks and waded the old jeep across the rapids and onto shore.

Q: Do I also need a rubber bushing?

Q: Is there a bronze bushing/bearing that slips into the leaf spring before the shackles are installed? Mine look like they have a little more room than what the shackle alone has. Or, are my springs just that beat up?

• A: No, just the bushing that comes with this shackle is all there ever was. Sounds like yours have been enlarged. We can help with all of this though. Please call us toll free.

Q: On the front drivers side. I have not removed the shackle yet, but it appears the round tubing which is welded into the frame for the upper part of the shackle to go through is wallered out. Is that part available?

Q: The leaf spring shackles appear to be threaded on outside, does that mean that the inside of the leaf spring where the shackle goes through is threaded also?

• A: The shackle actually bites into the metal so people often think the springs are actually threaded.

070: Mike Anderson’s 1965 Willys Truck

I have had this truck since 1977. It was a J200 2-Wheel Drive when I got it. I converted it to a 4×4 around 1980 with original jeep truck parts. It was a little easier but not much to find parts then! Almost impossible today.
The truck is titled 1965 but the information I have puts it being manufactured in 63 or 64. A couple of years ago I put power steering on it. I found everything original expect for a pump. That power steering by strong arm was getting old. 

Need to finish the interior. Maybe this summer!

To begin, Insert a leaf spring pivot eye bushing into the front of the leaf spring and align inside the leaf spring to frame pivot eye bracket, tapping into place. Secure the leaf spring to the bracket using a leaf spring pivot eye bolt. Using a nut and the appropriate tool, pull the bolt in further to create a groove that will keep the bolt secure. Remove the nut and slide on a lockwasher. Twist the nut back onto the bolt and tighten. Insert a cotter pin into the end of the bolt, wrapping the ends around the tip. Finally, insert the grease fitting in the open end of the bolt on the outside part of the frame and tighten to finish.

After you have lifted the rear axle and leaf spring assemblies, slide the leaf spring shackle into the rear end of the leaf spring assembly and the rear shackle bracket on the interior side of the frame. Next, secure the assembly using the threaded shackle bushings and tighten using the appropriate tool. Insert the grease fittings into the open end of the shackle bushings and tighten. Repeat for the opposing side.

First, place the rear axle on the leaf spring assemblies. Locate the rear driver’s side lower shock mount plate and U-bolt clips. Position a U-bolt clip around the axle shaft on each side of the leaf spring assembly. Secure to the lower shock mount plate underneath the leaf spring assembly, using 4 lock washers and u-bolt clip nuts. Repeat for the passenger’s side. Use a jack to lift the rear axle and leaf spring assemblies in preparation for rear shackle installation.

Next, slide a washer onto the shock absorber bracket shaft and insert a cotter pin, twisting the ends up to secure. Next, slide a washer onto the shaft of the lower shock mount plate, inserting a cotter pin, again, twisting the sides up to secure it in place.
