Build Your Willys: Rear Axle Removal

How to remove the Rear Axle from your Willys Jeep – Part of an ongoing “Jeep” disassembly and restoration series sponsored by Kaiser Willys.

To begin, remove the cotter pin and washer from the leaf spring pivot eye bolt and detach the shock absorber tube from the shackle bracket assembly. Disconnect the brake tube from the frame. Next, remove the four attaching nuts, the rear drivers side lower shock mount plate and pull out the remaining U Bolts from the axle assembly. Remove the leaf spring pivot eye & shackle bolt and disconnect the leaf spring from the front shackle bracket. Next, unscrew the leaf spring shackle. Slide the leaf spring from the leaf spring shackle to remove. Finally, when pulling the rear axle from the frame, please use the safest method available. The rear axle is very heavy and caution must be taken to avoid injury.

Build Your Willys: Front Axle Removal

How to remove the Front Axle from your Willys Jeep – Part of an ongoing “Jeep” disassembly and restoration series sponsored by Kaiser Willys.

First, remove the cotter pin & washer from the shock mount plate and shackle assembly. Next, disconnect the shock absorber from both the shackle and mounting plate assembly. Repeat this process on the opposing side.

Remove the four attaching nuts and “U” bolts to release the front drivers side torque reaction spring assembly. Next, remove the leaf spring pivot eye & shackle Bolt. Disconnect the leaf spring from the shackle brackets. Unscrew the leaf spring shackle and remove the leaf spring.

After detaching the “U” bolts from the shock mount plate assembly, remove the leaf spring pivot eye & shackle bolt and disconnect the leaf spring from the shackle brackets. Finally, when pulling the front axle from the frame, please use the safest method available. The front axle is very heavy and caution must be taken to avoid injury.

Build Your Willys: Drive Shaft Removal

How to remove the Front and Rear Driveshaft Assembly from your Willys Jeep – Part of an ongoing “Jeep” disassembly and restoration series sponsored by Kaiser Willys.

To begin, remove the Universal Joint U-Bolts from the transfer case output yoke & propeller shaft yoke. Next, remove the Universal Joint U-Bolts from the front differential pinion shaft yoke & propeller shaft yoke. Detach the driveshaft assembly. (Note: The cross located in the end of the drive shaft is the Spicer-Style Universal Joint.) Now, remove the four transfer case output yoke nuts attaching the output yoke to the brake drum on the transfer case. Remove the U Bolts from the end yoke. Finally, detach the drive shaft from the rear differential.
