How to Install your Willys Jeep CJ-5 Steering Knuckle – Part of an ongoing “How-To” disassembly and restoration series sponsored by Kaiser Willys.
To begin, place the king pin bearing cups flush in the axle housings. Next pull the oil seal felt padding and rubber seal over the axle for easy installation later. Place the greased king pin bearing cones in the bearing cups and grease the axle housing. Mount the steering knuckle support. Place shims on the king pin bearing cap before inserting it into the top of the knuckle support. Secure the bottom of the knuckle support with the second king pin bearing cap. Bolt on the king pin bearing caps with lock washers, tightening the bolts with the proper torque. Press the rubber oil seal into the back of the knuckle support around the axle housing. Next press the felt padding against the rubber seal. To finish, bolt on the upper and lower steel retaining plates, securing the oil seal.

When installing the knuckle back together with new bearings do you fill the knuckle with gear oil or with Grease?
Hi Dennis,
Here is a link to our Mechanics Manuals. They are very helpful! https://www.kaiserwillys.com/category/literature/mechanics-manuals
looking for a remove and repair manual where would I find one
Sirs, you never made mention of the proper preload on the bearing caps.
Shims must be equal top and bottom so you have even preload, takes a little time to do it, but thats the proper way.
Using a fish scale, you need 8-12 lb, of drag on just the knuckle itself.
Some of the old jeeps had a bearing and or a oilite bronze bushing on the knuckles, if you chuck the bushing and use a Timkin # 11590 bearing ( if memory serves me ) steering will improve( no shimmy) and things will last longer, alot longer.
I do realize this is not your first rodeo, but i thought people with limited knowledge on this subject may find it to be usefull.
Just my 2 cents…….thanks for all you do for the jeeping community.
Mark
