~ Sent to us by Curt Porteus. “Here is a short story below from the original owners daughter and my very good friend. I did the complete restoration (except for paint and upholstery) and I did it for my wife Alisa, she too had a father with a Willys Jeep and a lot of memory’s”.
My father, William Schwalbe purchased the Jeep upon his return from serving in Japan during the Korean War around 1953. He originally used it for hunting and fishing trips. Then in 1960, he and my mother built our house on 10 acres on Ahtanum Ridge, just outside of Yakima, WA. He used the Jeep to haul/tow building materials around the property. He used it also to haul his beloved horses in their trailer up to the mountains of the Eastern side of Cascade mountains west of Yakima. He and my mom had many “adventures” out and about in nature.
My earliest memories of the Jeep are riding along with my dad while he used a snowplow to clear our long driveway as well as all of our neighbors driveways. He also drove me to school in it a few times, when a car just couldn’t make it through the snow. Dad had intended to refurbish the Jeep and had, over the years, purchased many parts for this endeavor. However, due to poor health, he wasn’t able to fulfill his dream. I am sure he would be thrilled to see the wonderful restoration that Curt and Alisa have accomplished.
