Story written by Steve Salzman~
Flat fenders were the rule again at the Fall session of the Midwest Willys Reunion held in Jefferson City Mo. September 6 thru 8. According to the faithful regulars, this event began primarily as a military vehicle showcase but has evolved over the years to a preponderance of civilian jeeps. There was still a good military presence, however, with probably the largest grouping of M38s I have seen, plus a near mint M38A1 with trailer. Also in attendance was an (admittedly non-Willys) WWII German Kubelwagen which helps you appreciate by comparison, why the WWII jeep was such a phenomenon.
But it is not just the hardware that’s such a treasure at these meet-ups. The depth and range of knowledge represented by these exhibitors and vendors is staggering. Most will modestly claim to know “a little bit about jeeps” then knock your socks off with an abundance of details and specifics that makes your head spin and wishing you were wearing a recorder. Have a question about governors? There are three different types. You can find out about the differences and characteristics of each. How about the differing lug hole patterns in the wheels? These guys will know and be more than thrilled to explain it to you.
Unless someone has found the rare mint unmolested jeep, most of these vehicles have been changed, modified, and mutilated. Here’s a chance to ask questions of someone who probably know how these unique vehicles were once upon a time put together. Almost every conversation is a learning experience. It’s a great way to spend a weekend, but also a great treasure and resource. The promotors and volunteers are to be commended for an outstanding event.
